When you use a self storage unit, you need to know that your valuable possessions will be safe from thieves. Security is the essential element to check when comparing storage options. Both you and the storage company have a responsibility and contribute to the overall security of the facility and your personal goods. The first three tips below are things you can do to ensure your goods are secure and the last section of the article provides a brief list of security measures you should look for in a storage facility.
Tip 1 - Stop Tailgaters
Most self storage facilities will have a keypad access system at the main gate. When you key in your unique access code, the gate opens. Once you drive through, remain just past where the gate closes and ensure the gate is closed, so that anyone following you has to access the facility in a secure way. Do not allow anyone to follow you through the gate. If the person has legitimate business in the facility, they will have the access code. If not, they should not be there.
Tip 2 - Have Personal Locks
While the storage unit will have locks, you may wish to add a personal locking device to the unit doors, such as a padlock. You can leave a duplicate key with the facility manager to provide access if you lose your padlock key, but only when you prove you are the legitimate renter of the storage unit. An additional security device or lock prevents access by thieves who can legitimately enter the storage premises (by renting a storage unit themselves).
Tip 3 - Do Not Disclose Information
Do not disclose your security access code to anyone. If you must write it down, do so in a way that no-one would know what the code was for. Keep any documentation relating to your storage unit in a safe place, such as a home safe. Do not chat idly about what valuables you have in the storage facility, especially in public, as you do not know who could be listening to your conversation.
While these three security tips are common sense, it is amazing how often people forget to take responsibility for the security of their own goods. However, the security of your goods in a self storage facility also is the responsibility of the storage company. Look for a company that offers:
key pad secure access to the fenced site;
security cameras that record on digital media;
excellent lighting in and around the facility;
security guards or staff who patrol the area; and
a duty manager who can record who accesses any unit.
These security measures will help to ensure the security of your valuable goods. Do not use a storage facility that offers no security measures and relies on your own locks as security, as this will not be a safe way to store your goods.
